Kakching district police on Monday launched the first ‘Cycle Patrol Unit’ of Manipur Police at an event held at the office complex of the district superintendent of police. The unit was officially flagged off by Clay Khongsai, inspector general of police (Zone-I), Manipur.

60 cycles were initially provided to several police stations in the first phase.  120 cycles would be allotted for the entire police personnel of the district in total.

Yengkhom Victoria, SP, Kakching district, said the initiative is taken up under the guidance of her senior officers and is first of its kind in the state.

She asserted that the patrol unit will not only bring police and public closer but also improve the infrastructure of the police department and welfare of the personnel.

“With the insurgency problem in the state considerably reduced, we should now focus on improving the relationship between the police and people,” she said, adding that any initiative of the police would be futile without people’s co-operation, she added.

Clay Khongsai, IGP Zone-I, said that the initiative was taken up by the superintendent of police, Kakching district as part of community policing.

Dwelling into the benefits of the ‘Cycle Patrol Unit’, he said that it is a great initiative in terms of community policing as it would make the police less intimidating while discharging their duties.

He further said establishing cycle unit will not only save fuel considering the constraints in the police department but is also good for the environment and the police personnel.

The IG also suggested improvisation as when required to help in improving the functioning of the unit.

Appealing to the public to support such an initiative taken up by the police department, he said similar units would soon be established in other districts.
