BJP has appointed Union Minister of state Kiren Rijiju as election in-charge for Nagaland while Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as election in-charge in Tripura for the party. Party chief Amit Shah made the appointments, a statement said.
The Assembly elections in the two States are likely to be held early next year. Tripura is particularly high on the BJP’s agenda where it is working overtime to dethrone the Left Front government.
The announcement of election in-charge by BJP for Nagaland also seeks to end the speculation on whether assembly polls in the state would be postponed or not as the Naga peace is at crucial stage.
The BJP is keen to make headway in the north-east region where it has long been a marginal force. The formation of the North East Democratic Alliance of parties in alliance with the BJP for the region after the BJP won in Assam was the first signal of this keenness to win in the north-east. The BJP has governments in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh and has pinned its hopes on expansion.
The BJP on Saturday said the ball rolling for ensuing assembly elections in Nagaland and Tripura by appointing two key leaders from the region as election in-charge for the two states-where polls are due by February-March next year.
