The Mumbai police on Saturday detained prominent model-cum-television actress Devoleena Bhattacharjee for questioning in connection with the mysterious murder of diamond merchant  Rajeshwar Udani.

Bhattacharjee, who hails from Assam, shot into fame with her stint in Dance India Dance and subsequently in her role as Gopi Bahu in the serial Saath Nibhaana Saathiya.

According to media report, three days after Udani’s body was recovered by the Panvel police from a jungle in the adjoining Raigadh district, the police detained both Devoleena at the Mumbai airport on their arrival from Gawahati.

Devoleena, who is known for her lead role as Gopi Bahu in popular Hindi television serial Saath Nibhaana Saathiya, was questioned by the police all through the day. The investigators were not ruling out the possibility of her being arrested for her alleged role in Udani’s murder.

Fifty-seven-year-old Udani had gone missing from his office from November 28. His family members had lodged a complaint with the Pant Nagar police about Udani’s disappearance, following which a search had been launched for the missing diamond merchant. The investigators had tracked Udani’s mobile to  Rabale in Navi Mumbai before the signal went off.

Subsequently, the local police recovered a highly decomposed body from the forests surrounding Nere village near Panvel town, on December 4.  On Friday, Udani’s family members identified his body from the clothes and belt he had worn before he had gone missing six days earlier.

Udani’s driver had earlier informed the police that his employer had asked him to drop him near the Pant Nagar market, where he got into another car that arrived there soon afterwards.

The investigations have revealed that Udani, who used to enjoy night of Mumbai, would frequent bars every evening and spent a lot of time. Said to have a glad eye for women, Udani would befriend women by the dozen.

The investigators believe that Pawar, who had known Devoleena well, had introduced the actress to Udani. They have also a reason to suspect that Pawar might have involved Devoleena in the alleged murder of Udani and disposal of his forests of Raigad district.

Devoleena had earlier made headlines in the entertainment news world after she accused actress Utkarsha Naik, who played the role of Pramila in the same show of kidnapping her dog ‘Jugnu’ from the sets.
