Assam: Special cleanliness cum awareness drive in Hailakandi town

Hailakandi Municipal Board has launched a special cleanliness cum awareness drive in the town area on Sunday. The cleanliness drive that began at 7 am concluded at 9 am.

Leading from the front, Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli took to the streets by cleaning the roads with the officials, municipal workers, women, youth, NGOs and members of the public in tow.

On this occasion the oath was given to the denizens and they were sensitised about the importance of cleanliness. Many ward councilors and officials of both Municipal Board and district administration also participated actively in making the people aware about the drive.

The Municipal Board has constituted special teams to complete the drive successfully. Dress, equipment etc. has been provided to the workers engaged in this special drive. To keep eye on the work going on in different wards officials and staff have been deputed.

Door-to-door collection of wastes, segregation of waste at source, composting and recycling of wastes will be taken up within the municipal areas. User charge will be paid by denizens for collection of waste from individual households.

Plans are on the anvil to clean the riverfront and to remove obstacles impeding smooth flow of water.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Commissioner Jalli said that keeping the town clean is the duty of every citizen and everyone will have to be cautious that no one can harm the beauty of the town. She advised everyone to collect the garbage of their household and to give it to the assigned NGO of their area. Throwing the garbage hither and thither is a bad practice and everyone should shun this practice.

The ward councilors are actively taking part in this drive. “With DC leading from the front, we are hopeful that some good results will come through this drive. Through this special drive we are aiming to make Hailakandi a garbage free town and in this we solicit active participation of every citizen of this town, ” said an official of the Municipal Board.

The people of the town have praised the effort of DC and her team and said that this effort will certainly bear fruit in making the town free from filth and dirt.
