Assam NRC: Political Parties sought Prateek Hajela Removal

Assam’s political parties including Congress, AIUDF sought the removal of NRC coordinator Prateek Hajela.

Prateek Hajela, the state coordinator for the National Register of Citizens project in Assam, is facing the ire of political parties over his suggestion to the Supreme Court that the number of documents people can use to claim citizenship be cut to 10 from 15.

On one side the opposition Congress and AIUDF sought the Prateek Hajela’s removal from the post,  on the another side the  BJP asked the state and central governments to file an affidavit countering Hajela’s proposal.

The leaders of Brak valley also said Chief Secretary Alok Kumar, who recently visited the Valley , that the people of Barak Valley ‘have lost all faith in Prateek Hajela. The ruling BJP joined the chorus with Congress, AIUDF and Left parties for the removal of the state coordinator whose directives and guidelines have been the cause of serious resentment and anger among the people and the political parties.

Two-time former  MLA OF AIUDF from Katigorah constituency in Cachar district of Assam,  Maulana Ataur Rehman Mazarbhuiya, whose name is missing from NRC said that “State NRC co-ordinator, Prateek Hajela, is the root cause behind confusion and harassment of genuine Indian citizens in Assam.  His tough modalities of NRC have triggered great panic among the residents of Assam whose names have not appeared in the citizens’ list, he added

Meanwhile the National Register of Citizens  ( NRC )  is now in its final phase where the 40 lakh rejected applicants can make fresh claims to citizenship and inclusion in the final list.
