Assam: JICA survey team mission inspects medical institutions in Hailakandi dist

The team also inspected the road network in and around the medical facilities.

 A seven-member survey team mission of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) inspected the medical facilities in Southern Assam’s aspirational Hailakandi district on Friday.

Headed by Chiaki Kuranami, the team first visited the SK Roy Civil Hospital and interacted with the officials of the health and family welfare department and hospital authorities to know about the available facilities and the problems plaguing the hospital.

Later the Japanese team visited Algapur and Kalinagar primary health centres and analysed the existing conditions and issues in order to ‘identify the potential development projects for connectivity improvement in and around the medical facilities’.

The team also inspected the road network in and around the medical facilities.

The JICA survey team is on a mission mode to undertake a basic study on Assam and North East network connectivity improvement as a whole and to identify potential development projects which will contribute to social development such as health service improvement.

“The JICA team is here to collect information on existing situation, issues and potential measures to improve accessibility to health service in Hailakandi district and other parts of Assam and the North East, ” said District Programme Manager, National Health Mission, Maruf Alom Barbhuiya, adding that this may result in possible JICA assistance in future.

Besides Kuranami, the team comprises deputy team leader and highway planning expert, Youhei Soma, health facility planning expert, Kenji Ishida, health facility design expert, Hideaki Kanayama, medical equipment specialist, Hironori Nakajima, health sector analyst, Chiharu Abe and coordinator, Ayako Kondo.

People close to development say, it is as part of Japan’s growing engagement with India, JICA is willing to fund infrastructure projects in North Eastern Region. They also mentioned that it is an outcome of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to Japan, where both the sides decided to further enhance cooperation in various projects and to strengthen cooperation in the field of connectivity and socio-economic development in North East India.
