Assam Flood: toll at 12, and 4.5 lakh people affected

The devastating flood in Assam has claimed Five more lives during the past 24 hours, taking the death toll to 12. and over 4.5 lakh people have been affected at 6 districts in current wave of floods.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), all the five persons lost their lives in three districts, taking the death toll in the state to 12 in the first wave of flood this year.

NDRF and SDRF rescued 6 thousand people yesterday at Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi districts in Barak valley. Nearly 1.73 displaced people have taken shelter at temporary relief camps. Necessary food items including rice, dal, salt and drinking water are being given among the affected people.

Flood water also damaged roads, river embankment and crop land. Several ministers and officials visited the affected areas to take stock of the situation. Assam Water Resource minister Keshab Mahanta visited Hailakandi and Silchar at Barak valley and assessed the flood situation. Later, Mr. Mahanta held meetings with district officials and instructed them to provide all help to flood hit people.

The ASDMA said over 4.48 lakh people have been affected in Hojai, Karbi Anglong West, Golaghat, Karimganj, Hailakandi and Cachar districts.

According to the report issued today, Karimganj has been the worst-hit with nearly 2.15 lakh people affected followed by Hailakandi where over 1.93 lakh people have been suffering in the deluge.

As of now, Brahmaputra at Nimatighat in Jorhat, while Barak at AP Ghat in Cachar and Badarpurghat in Karimganj are flowing above the danger mark. Other rivers like Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat, Jia Bharali at NT Road crossing in Sonitpur, Kopili at Kampur in Nagaon, Katakhal at Matizuri in Hailakandi and Kushiyara at Karimganj town are also flowing above the danger mark.
