The Congress will approach the Supreme Court if the BJP-led government passes the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. This was stated by State Congress president Ripun Borah in a protest rally against the Bill at Pathsala on Wednesday.

The rally was held under the aegis of Bhabanipur Block Congress Committee and Bajali Block Congress Committee of Barpeta district.

Borah criticised the AGP for not withdrawing support from the government. He also criticised the role of the BJP government for putting the future of the indigenous people of the State in great danger by proposing to pass such a dangerous Bill and dishonouring the Assam Accord. He cited the example of IM (DT) which was repealed by the Supreme Court.

As many as three Congress MLAs Sherman Ali, Jakir Hussain and Abdul Khalek and other important district-level Congress leaders took part in the rally. Protesters numbering around 2,500 shouted slogans against the Citizenship Bill.

The protesters gathered at the Rajib Bhawan, Pathsala and took out the rally from Azad Bhawan and went to the SDO Civil office. The protesters also submitted a memorandum to the JPC, citing their strong objection to the Citizenship Bill.
