Assam: AKRSU stages dharna demanding separate Kamatapur state

Kokrajhar

The All Koch-Rajbanshi Students’ Union (AKRSU) on Monday  staged a sit-in near Kokrajhar deputy commissioner’s office demanding a separate Kamatapur state and Scheduled Tribe status.

The supporters of AKRSU and activists of the All Koch Rajbanshi Mahila Samiti joined the demonstration and shouting slogans with posters and banners, officials said.

The students’ body then submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the deputy commissioner of Kokrajhar.

AKRSU has been demanding a separate state of Kamatapur carved out of Assam, West Bengal and Bihar.

AKRSU president Arun Roy alleged that both the state and central governments have been politicising the issues of the Koch-Rajbanshis for a long time.

Neither the Opposition Congress nor the ruling BJP bothered to resolve the long-standing demands of the community, he said.

“We want our demands to be fulfilled. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself had promised to fulfil our demands during an election rally at Bongaigaon and it is very unfortunate that the Centre forgot about us,” Roy asserted.

“We will begin an anti-BJP agitation if the Centre does not give due importance to our demands. The Koch-Rajbanshi community will give a befitting answer to the political parties, playing with the community’s sentiments, during the Lok Sabha election next year,” Roy said.
