Assam: 15 Infants die in JMCH in 6 days

Fifteen infants with various complications have died in Govt run Jorhat Medical College and Hospital, in Assam.

Altogether 84 newborn babies were admitted to the Special Care Newborn Unit during November 1 to November 6, out of which 15 newborns died due to various ailments.

The  JMCH Superintendent Dr Shaurabh Borkotoky on informed the media that a 6 member committee has been formed to evaluate the recent death report of 15 newborn babies in the hospital from November 1 to 6, 2018.

Dr Shaurabh Borkotoky also informed that the committee will try verifying the exact reasons for the death of these babies in the hospital. “I got to know about the incident after the HOD of Paediatrics Department informed me on November 7 and immediately formed an enquiry committee to investigate the matter. HOD of the Paediatrics Department will be leading the team as ‘Chairman’,” said Dr Borkotoky.

On being questioned about the reasons for this incident, Dr Borkotoky replied, “We cannot assume the reasons for the death of these newborn babies as of now. The enquiry committee will verify and we will submit the report to the Government of Assam accordingly. Strict action will be taken by the Government if we find any major lapses from the hospital staff in this regard.”

He further stated that due to the shortage of staffs can be one kind of reason when there is a large scale rush of patients in the hospital. “So far there is no lapse from ICU Department,” Dr Borkotoky added.
